Aboutrika smashed home a nod-on by Flavio Amado from outside the box two minutes into stoppage time to give Ahly their fifth Champions League triumph. Before that dramatic winner Sfaxien appeared to be coasting to their first-ever Champions League title on the away goals rule after both teams had played out a draw in the first leg final in Cairo a forthnight ago.

Defending champions Al Ahly went on the offensive from the kick-off knowing that they will need to score at least a goal in Tunisia to stand any chance of retaining their crown.

They dominated the midfield thanks in part to their numerical strength in that part of the pitch but gradually the host team began to find their feet and as to also launch their own attacks.

Angola international striker Flavio was first to make any serious attempt at goal after six minutes when his shot from 30 metres almost caught Sfaxien goalkeeper Ahmed Jaouachi off his line only to miss target narrowly. However, the best chance of the first 45 minutes fell to Sfaxien central defender Issam Merdassi just before the half hour mark.

The exciting Abdelkrim Nafti delivered a delightful cross from the left but an unmarked Merdassi failed to direct his header from six yards into the Ahly net. The second half proved to be livelier as both teams now had more space with which to express themselves.

Ahly could have taken the lead just before the hour when Hossam Ashour let fly a shot only for goalkeeper Jaouachi to pull off a one-handed save by scrambling away the goal-bound shot for a corner kick. The Sfaxien goalkeeper was agile enough to make a second save off a header from the rebound.
